Dating back to the 17^th century, a lovespoon was a spoon decoratively carved from a single piece of wood and given as a symbol of love by a young man to his intended. The skill and intricacy of the decoration was important to show the girl’s family that he was capable of earning enough money to support her, whilst the shapes that he carved into the spoon each had their own language and symbolism.
